Gilbert F. Fredrickson

Fredrickson, Gilbert F. 84 10/28/1925 04/21/2010 Gilbert "Gil" Fredrickson, a lifelong resident of Portland, died April 21, 2010, of a head injury sustained in a fall. He was 84 years old. Gil was born to Scandinavian immigrant parents, Fred and Hilda Fredrickson, Oct. 28, 1925. He was the youngest of four children. He graduated from Washington High School in 1943, served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator in the South Pacific at the end of World War II, and returned to Oregon after the war. Gil married Shirley Rhodes in June 1948, while a student at Oregon State College (now University). He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in engineering from OSC in June 1950. Gil obtained a job with Hoffman Construction Co., shortly after his graduation from college. He worked for Hoffman Construction during the entirety of his 36-year-long career as a civil engineer. He was licensed as a professional engineer in Oregon and Washington, and served as vice president of the company in charge of the estimating department from 1979 until his retirement in 1986. After retirement, Gil and Shirley enjoyed traveling and spent summers at Arch Cape on the Northern Oregon coast. He was an active member of Sunset Presbyterian Church in Portland. Gil is survived by his wife, Shirley; and daughters, Susan Fredrickson of Farmington, N.M.; Nancy (Bill) Hockett of Portland; and Trina (Rick) Morford of Coupeville, Wash. His grandchildren include Aaron (Catherine) Hockett of Beaverton, Amy (Matt) Garrett of New York and Nichole Morford of Denver. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his siblings, Arnold Fredrickson, Agnes Krum and Elvy Fredrickson. Gil's memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2010, in Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 N.W. Cornell Road, Portland. Rev. Ake Lundberg will officiate. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Gil's memory to the Sunset Presbyterian Church Benevolent Fund.
