Richard Atiyeh, Age 91

Atiyeh, Richard Alexander, 91 Oct. 02, 1921 July 08, 2013. Richard Atiyeh passed away surrounded by his loving family. Born on Oct. 2, 1921, in Portland, Richard was raised along with his brothers, Edward and Victor. 

Richard attended Washington High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the University of Oregon. Richard met the love of his life, Mary Alice, at the U of O after returning from serving in the Army in WWII, where he was a prisoner of war in Germany. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, among other medals, for his service. 

Richard is survived by his brothers, Edward and Victor; sisters-in-law, Karen and Dolores; three children, George, Mary-Winn and Catherine; daughter-in-law, Hillary; and sons-in-law, Tom and Bruce. He was adored by 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Richard enjoyed a successful career in the Oriental rug and carpet business established by his father, George, and uncle, Aziz, in 1900. 

Richard left a lasting impact on his community. He was honored by the Volunteers of America as an All Star Citizen. Among his many accomplishments were serving as Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army, where he created the "Coats for Kids" outreach program and was made an honorary Colonel. He was also President of the Downtown Lions Club, President of the Portland Golf Club and Prime Minister of the Royal Rosarians. 

Richard was one of 12 founding members of the Retail Floor Covering Institute. He was a member of the Episcopal Parish of St. John the Baptist. Richard's family appreciates the loving care Richard received from the staff at Edgewood Point Assisted Living and Providence Hospice. Richard's sense of humor will be missed by his many friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Salvation Army Cascade Division or the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation are appreciated.
