George Flink

Flink, Casper 'George' 80 11/22/1929 02/15/2010 George was born on the family farm in Taylor, N.D. The family moved to Monmouth in the 1930s and later settled in Portland where he graduated from Washington High School in 1948. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served four years. He was proud to have graduated from the New London Submarine School and he served aboard the submarine USS Bream (SS243) based out of San Diego. He married Carlotta Hildenbrand and they were married for 36 years. His daughter, Linda, was born in San Diego and the family relocated to Portland where George began his 50-year career as a real estate owner and broker. George was an avid world traveler, loved gardening and his pets were very important including "Butch" the hummingbird. He was very proud of being a life member of the Masonic Lodge, a life member of Submarine Veterans (SubVets), the Holland Club and Resurrection Lutheran Church. George died at his home in Indio, Calif., with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife, Carlotta; daughter, Linda Schlechter; and sisters, Eleanora Steele and Pauline Evans. George was proud Grandpa of Marney (Lane) Hoffman and J.C. (Meg) Schlechter; and great-grandson, Cash Hoffman. He also leaves a host of other family members and friends. There will be a viewing in Rose City Funeral Home from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1700 N.E. 132nd Ave., Portland. Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a memorial fund at Rose City Cemetery for a bench in George's memory.
