Salvatore Lawrence "Sam" Campagna

Campagna, Salvatore 'Sam' Lawrence 85 12/23/1924 05/01/2010 Sam's parents, Salvatore and Mary Campagna, emi-grated from Sicily to Portland in the early 1900s. They had three children, Josephine, Salvatore "Sam" and Mario. Sam graduated from Washington High School in January 1943 while working at the Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS West Virginia. From 1946 to 1950 he attended Oregon State College where he majored in electrical engineering and was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. In January 1949 Sam met Hope Corner and told a friend that she was the woman he would marry. They married in December 1950, were blessed with five children and enjoyed 59 years together. After college, Sam worked at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., and in 1951 he began his lifelong career with Pacific Power & Light in Portland as an electrical engineer, planning substations. In 1960, he was appointed assistant chief planning engineer and in 1964, received his professional engineer degree. Sam transferred to Casper, Wyo., in 1965 as PP&L's Wyoming division engineer. In 1968, he transferred back to Portland to research the building of either a nuclear or coal-fired electrical plant. He became the project manager to build the coal-fired Jim Bridger plant in Rock Springs, Wyo. Sam retired May 1, 1986, after 34 years with PP&L. Sam and Hope enjoyed traveling south for the winters; playing in golf tournaments, where Sam achieved two holes-in-one; and spending time with friends. Sam especially loved the monthly poker games with the fellows, tournament bridge with his wife and the friendly neighborhood bridge groups. Becoming a bronze life master was a major achievement in his personal life. Sam will always be known for his witty sense of humor, work ethic and love of family. He combated the severe disabilities inflicted on him by Parkinson's disease with strength and courage. He spent his final five years at Tendercare Adult Home and died peacefully May 1, 2010, with his wife and children present to say goodbye. Sam is survived by his wife, Hope; brother, Dr. Mario (Edie) Campagna; children, Michael (Shirley) Campagna, Patricia (Dr. Terry) Owens, Susan Chait, Gail Campagna and David (Lori) Campagna; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His sister, Josephine McPherson, preceded him in death. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 24, 2010, in St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1280 N.W. Saltzman Road, Portland, OR 97229.
