Carmelita (Koehler) Smith

Carmelita (Koehler) Smith.  Carmelita Smith was born on March 24, 1913 and passed away on May 23, 2010. She is survived by her son, John Oscarson and his wife Gabriele, brother Frank (Bud) Koehler Jr., two granddaughters, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was born in Salt Lake City but moved to Portland at a young age. While growing up, she spent most of her time in the Portland area but also felt privileged to have the opportunity to move with her family to various cities around Oregon. This was a result of her father being a civil engineer and being the construction foreman for the installation of many sewer systems in Oregon towns. Some of these included Condon and Grants Pass. She always liked to talk about her friends in Condon and riding a horse to school.

Carmelita graduated from Washington High School in 1931 and attended Reed College. She had numerous jobs including working for IBM, banks, lumber companies and Federal Agencies. After several years she left the work force to marry and raise a family. Later, she returned to school and trained for librarianship. She worked for over twenty years for the Multnomah County Library – first as an Assistant Librarian in “Books for the Blind” and later as an Adult Librarian in a branch library.

At Carmelita’s request, no formal service has been scheduled but a private get-together will be held at a later date. The family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
