Bernice Jack

Jack, Bernice 85 04/08/1925 07/05/2010 Bernice Jack of Portland passed away of natural causes July 5, 2010. Born April 8, 1925, to Emily and George Ashkar in Jersey City, N.J., Bernice moved to Oregon in 1936 with her parents and sister, Dolores. After graduating from Washington High School, where she met her future husband, David, she attended St. Helen's Hall Junior College in Portland. After David returned from Italy following World War II, Bernice married her sweetheart and they moved to Laguna Beach, Calif., while he attended college at University of Southern California. Once back in Portland, Dave started his business while Bernice was busy with three daughters and an active social calendar. When the girls were teenagers, the family grew again with the addition of a son. Bernice and Dave traveled extensively, first for business and later for pleasure. They spent many happy times exploring the world on their own terms. Bread, cheese, and wine in the bag, roadside flowers on the dashboard, and no reservations. Bernice loved playing golf with her husband and they were members of Waverley Country Club in Portland and Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., until the last few years. Bernice also loved the opera and attended performances in Portland and around the world. Bernice is survived by a large community of family and friends including her husband, David; sister, Dolores of Tacoma; children, Joann Davis, Diane Lokting, and David Jack, all of Portland, and Marilyn Jack of Sisters; grandchildren, Alicia, Adrienne, Amber, Leslie, Lauren, Kelly, Brina, Jamie, Courtney, and David; and great-grandchildren, Emily and Noah. She will be missed by all. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 in St. Mary's Cathedral, Portland.
